BAGUIO CITY (PIA) — The Department of Public Works and Highways – Cordillera (DPWH-CAR) appeals to motorists to possibly avoid Kennon Road and pass through alternate routes in going to and from Baguio City and Benguet especially with the inclement weather.
DPWH-CAR Regional Director Khadaffy Tanggol said that Kennon Road over the long weekend (October 31 to Nov. 4) experienced heavy traffic flow particularly at the newly constructed temporary acrow bridge in Camp 2 in Barangay Twin Peaks in Tuba, Benguet.
He advised that it is better to use alternate roads such as the Marcos Highway and the Asin-Nangalisan-San Pascual-La Union Boundary Road, for the safety of the road users especially during inclement weather.
“We advise the public to take alternate roads because many portions of Kennon still have loose soil and there are falling stones or rocks at the whole stretch,” he said.
There are still ongoing engineering works in the different parts of the historic road such as the completion of the rock shed along Camp 6 and other works along the stretch of the 32- kilometer road.
Kennon Road closed on September 7, 2024, following a road slip at the Camp 2 area due to the combined effects of the tropical storms and the enhanced southwest monsoon or the habagat.
The DPWH-CAR constructed a temporary acrow bridge to provide temporary access to residents passing through the area.
The bridge was completed on October 30. The MBLISTTDA Council or the Metro Baguio-La Trinidad-Itogon-Sablan-Tuba-Tublay Development Authority Council chaired by Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong ordered the opening of the Kennon Road effective October 31, 2024 but for light vehicles and Baguio City and Benguet residents only to allow them easier travel during the observance of the All Saints and All Souls Day.
Motorists are cautioned to take all the necessary precautions when passing through Kennon Road. (RMC- PIA CAR)
