MTWD strengthens water security through modernization, climate-resilient projects

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) —  To improve water services for the city’s growing population, the Metropolitan Tuguegarao Water District (MTWD) has enhanced water security within its area of operations by implementing a series of key infrastructure projects, including the construction of new pumping wells and the modernization of its pipeline network.

Expanding Water Production Capacity

One of the most notable achievements of MTWD is the expansion of the city’s water production capacity, which led the water district to establish nine production wells, including pumping stations, which together have a combined capacity to supply an average of 50 liters per second, a critical development addresses the long-standing issue of water scarcity in Tuguegarao.

“This has been one of our primary focuses — to ensure a more reliable water supply for the city,” said MTWD General Manager Engr. Miller C. Tanguilan.

Upgrading the Distribution Network

MTWD has also focused on modernizing the city’s water distribution network. The district has laid over 260 kilometers of new pipelines, ranging in size from two inches to 20 inches, as part of an ongoing effort to replace outdated infrastructure.

“This upgrade is crucial for improving water flow, reducing leakage, and ensuring that water reaches residents more efficiently,” he added.

Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

Recognizing the increasing threats posed by climate change, MTWD has prioritized the adoption of climate-resilient designs for its pumping stations. These upgrades are intended to ensure continuous water service during natural disasters such as floods.

“We’ve incorporated technologies that allow for greater flexibility in managing water pressure, including systems like the one in Ugac Sur that adjust pressure levels based on demand,” Tanguilan explained.

New Surface Water Treatment Plant

Looking to the future, MTWD is also diversifying its water sources. The water district is in the process of developing a surface water treatment plant, which is currently 30% complete.

When fully operational next year, the plant will serve as the city’s main water source, with an initial production capacity of 30 million liters per day.

“This new plant will greatly enhance our capacity to meet the growing demand for water in Tuguegarao and provide a more sustainable source for the city’s long-term needs,” Tanguilan said.

Commitment to Long-Term Water Security

Through these modernization and climate-resilient projects, MTWD is working to ensure that Tuguegarao’s residents have access to a reliable and sustainable water supply now and in the future.

By continuing to invest in infrastructure, expand water production, and adapt to climate challenges, MTWD is advancing the city’s water security and supporting its continued growth. (MFJ/PIA Region 2)
