Mujer-LGBT Org honored for contributions to LGBTQI+ community

Mujer-LGBT Organization, one of the active organizations in Zamboanga City that continuously pushes for equality, anti-discrimination and supports the city’s gender development, received an international award, acknowledging its significant contributions to the community’s well-being during the pandemic and their fight against HIV/AIDS.

The 7th HERO Awards 2023, organized by APCOM Foundation, formerly known as Asia-Pacific Coalition for Male Sexual Health, in Bangkok, Thailand, recognized Mujer-LGBT Organization as a symbol of the collective power, compassion, and unwavering support demonstrated by the organization in navigating the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Community members, supporters, and allies throughout the Asia-Pacific region were invited to nominate individuals and organizations across 10 categories who directly help others, whose work is improving the well-being of others, or whose achievements are inspiring others: Business Ally, Community Ally, Community Hero, Community Organization, COVID-19 Hero, Health & Wellbeing, HIV Hero, Social Justice, Transgender Hero, and Young Achiever.

The Founder and Executive Director of the Mujer-LGBT Organization, Toni Gee Fernandez expressed gratitude, as this award isn’t just a recognition of the organization’s work at the grassroots; it’s also a celebration of the strength and solidarity within the LGBTQIA+ community on the island of Mindanao in navigating the challenges of the pandemic.

The global pandemic also affected the LGBTQIA+ community; however, the Mujer-LGBT Organization faced these challenges, highlighting the power of compassion, inclusivity, and unwavering support for one another. Their resilience in the face of adversity became a guiding light, fostering a sense of community that transcends geographical boundaries.

As the Mujer-LGBT Organization continues its journey, the receipt of the HERO Award serves as a reminder to remain steadfast in the commitment to inclusivity, understanding, and the overall well-being of every member of the LGBTQIA+ community. This award is a symbol of hope and a testament to what the LGBTQIA+ community can achieve together. (AAG/KSA/RVC/MLE/PIA-Zamboanga City)
