This February, the National Arts Month (NAM) is paying tribute to the country’s artistic legacy that is deeply intertwined with the hearts and minds of Filipinos.
Themed, “Ani ng Sining, Diwa, at Damdamin,” this year’s National Arts Month celebration serves as a call to action, to encourage Filipinos to embrace their creativity, honor their heritage, and shape the future of Philippine culture through art.
Edward Perez, head of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)’s Dramatic Arts Committee, said art can serve as a bridge between the past and present.
Perez shared as he acknowledged the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping modern artistic expressions.
“We have entered an era where technology and digital media are more prevalent. It may seem like art has disappeared but in reality, it is still there. It has merely changed its form and medium.”
Technology has also expanded artistic possibilities. Social media has transformed how art is created, shared, and consumed with many artists gaining recognition to both niche and public followers.
TikTok and Instagram, two of the most popular platforms for sharing digital content, have become powerful tools for artists to make their masterpieces more accessible to the audience.
“Each generation may have different languages and experiences. But in this digital age, art remains a constant reflection of who we are. We at the NCCA wish that the current generation saved some space to create works of art that fit the context of globalization and the development of Filipino culture.”
He further highlighted the importance of celebrating and supporting contemporary Filipino artists.
“By celebrating and emphasizing to give today’s generation a chance to create meaningful art that still honors Filipino culture through a new medium.”
Perez also urged the public to make this year’s celebration more meaningful and inspire budding young artists to create works of art that will benefit the community.
“Above all, let’s celebrate with purpose. Let’s create art that inspires the youth and helps the growth of every Filipino and our communities.” (DA, PB/PIA-4A)
