National Security Adviser, Philippine Coast Guard Commandant inaugurate new monitoring station in Itbayat, Batanes

MANILA — The National Security Adviser, Gen. Eduardo Año, and the Philippine Coast Guard Commandant, Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, inaugurated the Philippine Coast Guard Monitoring Station in Itbayat, Batanes on May 23. The event was attended by Governor Marilou Cayco of Batanes and members of the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS).

The primary purpose of this advanced monitoring station is to enhance the maritime domain awareness capability of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). It will enable effective monitoring of vessels passing through the northernmost territory of the Philippines. Notably, there have been instances of People’s Republic of China (PRC) vessels being observed in this maritime area as they cross to the Philippines’ eastern seaboard.

The construction of this project began last year with strong support from Congress. The increased annual budget for the PCG has facilitated the acquisition of sophisticated satellite monitoring systems and state-of-the-art equipment, ensuring the station’s effectiveness.

During the inauguration event, Secretary Año emphasized the timeliness of the construction of this facility, given the numerous security challenges faced by the Philippines in this area and its significance on the flow of trade. On the other hand, the Commandant, Admiral Gavan expressed gratitude for the successful construction and inauguration of the PCG building, attributing it to the cooperation and unity of efforts between the national government and local government units. Both Sec. Año and Admiral Gavan extended appreciation to the LGU Batanes for their invaluable support in realizing this project.

The Philippine Coast Guard Monitoring Station in Itbayat, Batanes, serves as a testament to the national government’s commitment to safeguarding its maritime domain and ensuring the security of its territories. With its cutting-edge technology and strategic location, the station is poised to become a vital asset in ensuring that our seas are safe, secure, and protected. (NSC)
