Naujan, Victoria LGUs work together to adopt flood mitigation program

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) — The municipalities of Naujan and Victoria joined together in a recent meeting to tackle issues pertaining to the adoption of a flood mitigation program as the two municipalities both suffered from severe flooding over the weekends.

Naujan Mayor Henry Joel Teves said flooding in their area is a long-time recurring problem of most Naujeños, hence he took precedence among the priority programs to address and provide mitigating measures for the problem.

Teves said the Municipal Government has insufficient funds and machinery to end the floods.  Consequently, the local chief executive interacts with the National Government to ask for help for the sake of all the constituents.

Included in the steps taken by Teves was the coordination to the neighboring town of Victoria which is also experiencing the same scenario during rainy seasons.

Teves personally talked with Victoria Mayor Lito Malabanan to tackle flood issues because one of the origins where water passes through is a river in the jurisdiction of Victoria.

The two chief executives agreed on the immediate dredging and rehabilitation of rivers that affect residents of the two municipalities.  They also asked help from the National Government as well as from the private companies of Naujan and Victoria with machinery that could immediately help solve the problem.

“Hindi ito kaya ng lokal na pamahalaan lamang kung kaya’t magtulung-tulong tayo para sa ating bayan, para sa ating mga kababayan,” said Teves.  (LTC/PIA MIMAROPA)
