QUEZON CITY, (PIA) – The Navotas City government awarded new scholarship grants to 28 beneficiaries under the NavotaAs Academic Scholarship Program for the school year 2024-2025.

Two of the scholarship grants were awarded to public school teachers pursuing postgraduate studies.

The remaining beneficiaries of the scholarship program include a total of 15 incoming high school students and 11 incoming college freshmen.

Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco reiterated the local government’s commitment to invest in programs that improve the access of residents to quality education, particularly the youth.

“Education is the key to a brighter future for our youth and our community. Through the NavotaAs Scholarship Program, we invest in the potential of both our students and teachers. We strive to support their academic pursuits and help them achieve their dreams,” said Tiangco.

Tiangco also commended the efforts of Navotas scholars to deliver a compelling academic performance which reflects their potential to positively contribute to the progressive development of the city.

“Pinagmamalaki po kayo ng ating lungsod. Kayo po ang simbolo ng katalinuhan at kasipagan. Ito po ay ginagawa natin para patuloy nating makamit ang ating mga pangarap. Gusto po natin na lahat ng kabataan may pangarap at walang limitasyon ang kanilang pangarap,” he added.

[The local government takes great pride in you. You are the symbol of excellence and diligence. We are doing this (program) so that we can continue reaching our dreams. We want every youth in the city to dream with no limitations.]

The NavotaAs Scholarship Program requires applicants to undergo a qualifying exam and a corresponding interview to determine eligibility.

In addition, high school students applying for the scholarship grant must belong to the top 10 percent of the graduating elementary class.

Navotas Polytechnic College (NPC) scholars, on the other hand, will only qualify for the scholarship if they belong to the top 25 percent of the graduating senior high school class while merit scholars must be among the top 10 of the same graduating class.

A stipend amounting to P18,000 per academic year is given to identified high school scholars for their book, transportation, and food expenses.

NPC scholars meanwhile receive P22,000 per academic year to cover the cost of their tuition fees as well as book, transportation, and food allowance.

Merit scholars are granted P262,000 for the same educational expenses upon admission in any college or university within Metro Manila.

Further, the selected teacher scholars will be given P75,000 every academic year alongside a research grant.

The local government of Navotas also supports fisherfolk, art, and athletic scholars. (JMP/PIA-NCR)
