MANILA, (PIA) — The city government rolled out various programs and services for the benefit of the Navoteño youth.
Mayor John Rey Tiangco signed a memorandum of agreement providing scholarship to 21 new beneficiaries of the NavotaAs Scholarship Program for the school year 2023-2024.
Six students qualified for the Ulirang Pamilyang Mangingisda Scholarship offered to family members of registered fisherfolk who won at the annual search for the Top Ten Most Outstanding Fisherfolk.
Meanwhile, 15 student artists were granted scholarship following the rigorous selection process conducted by special screening committees in five artistic disciplines, namely visual arts, music, dance, theater arts, and creative writing.
Navotas also welcomed 317 new technical and vocational graduates from Navotas Vocational Training and Assessment (NAVOTAAS) Institute and TESDA-NavotaAs Training Institute.
Of this, 13 completed Automotive Servicing NC I; 21, Electrical Installation and Maintenance NC II; 26, Shield Metal Arc Welding NC II; 25, Japanese Language and Culture; and 25, Basic Korean Language and Culture.
Moreover, 65 trainees finished Bread and Pastry Production NC II; 22, Barista NC II; 21, Food and Beverage Services NC II; and 26 for Housekeeping.
In addition, 20 trainees completed Refrigerator and Aircon Servicing (DOMRAC) NC II; 16 finished Driving NC II; and 23 graduated from Produce Organic Concoctions and Extracts.
Tiangco also led the distribution of 40 smart TVs, 287 wall fans, and 287 ceiling fans to public elementary and high schools.
Among the elementary schools that received 55-inch smart TVs and electric fans were North Bay Boulevard North Elementary School, San Roque Elementary School, and Tanza Elementary School.
Secondary school beneficiaries included Navotas National High School, San Rafael Technical and Vocational High School, and Kaunlaran High School.
NavotaAs Hanapbuhay Center, in cooperation with Schools Division Office–Navotas, also launched the One School, One Product Program (OSOP).
OSOP is a livelihood program that allows Senior High School students to learn entrepreneurship skills and earn an income by developing a marketable product that also promotes the city’s local resources.
Among the entries were Spanish Style Tahong and Vegetable Nuggets from Navotas National High School; Bidbid Eomuk or fish cake, Tangos National High School; Pansit ng Navotas, San Roque National High School; Corn Cob Cookies, Filemon T. Lizan Senior High School; Post Cards of Navotas Heritage Sites, Kaunlaran High School; NavoRoll, Bangkulasi Senior High School; Pickled Vegetables, Tanza National High School; and Seafood Delights, San Rafael Technological and Vocational High School.
The participating schools will be showcasing their products in this year’s Christmas Bazaar held at the Navotas Citywalk and Amphitheater on November 23-25, and 30, and December 1-2, and 7-9.
“Education remains to be one of our top priorities. We aim to provide Navoteño students with the highest quality of education and open opportunities for them to have the best future,” Tiangco said.
Meanwhile, Navotas City Health Office, in partnership with the Philippine National Red Cross, held an HPV Caravan for cervical cancer awareness and prevention. Navoteño girls, aged nine, received vaccines against human papillomavirus (HPV) which causes certain kinds of cancers, most notably cervical cancer.
Participants of the caravan also got free medicines, and hygiene kits. Navoteño women aged 30-49 also availed of the free HPV screening.
In addition, 75 profiled Navoteño child laborers received early Christmas gifts through Project Angel Tree.
The children went home with gift packs, grocery bags, and school supplies from the Child Labor Prevention and Elimination Program of the Department of Labor and Employment, in cooperation with Public Employment Service Office – Navotas, the Navotas Tripartite Industrial Peace Council, and various private companies in the city.
“Navoteño children deserve nothing but the best. Our goal is to make services and programs more accessible for every child to live a happy and healthy life,” Tiangco said. (PIA-NCR)
