NBI-9 calls for community participation in fight vs “Tsabu”

PAGADIAN CITY (PIA) – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)-9 urged the public to join efforts in combating the increasing illegal drug problem in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

NBI-9 Regional Director Atty. Moises Tamayo calls for the public to join efforts in combating the increasing illegal drug problem in the region.

Regional Director Atty. Moises Tamayo of NBI-9 made this call during the 19th episode of the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas program on October 1. One particular problem discussed is the alarming presence of “tsabu”, a term used for shabu (methamphetamine) concealed in tea packets.

Atty. Tamayo expressed concern over the increasing distribution of shabu in the region, especially due to its location and vast coastline, which makes monitoring challenging. He emphasized that law enforcement alone cannot effectively address the issue.

“Continuous monitoring kami dyan. Sa totoo lang nakakagulat, nakarating na pala dito [sa Region 9] yung ‘tsabu’. Nahihirapan kami dito kasi masyadong porous itong dagat natin, sobrang laki. Kailangan namin ang tulong ng mamamayan o komunidad para malabanan ito,” said Atty. Tamayo.

(We are continuously monitoring this. Honestly, it’s shocking that ‘tsabu’ has already reached the region. We are struggling because our seas are too porous, too vast. We need the help of the citizens or the community to fight this.”)

Furthermore, Atty. Tamayo emphasized the importance of unity and collective action in the fight against illegal drugs. He underscored that the strength of the nation lies in its people coming together, despite geographical divisions. Community participation is deemed crucial in preventing the further spread of this dangerous substance.

“Nagkakahiwalay man ang ating mga isla, pero tayo ay pinag-uugnay ng iisang diwa at pangarap ng makamtan natin ang ‘Bagong Pilipinas’,” Atty. Tamayo remarked.

(Our islands may be separated, but we are united by a single spirit and dream to achieve a “Bagong Pilipinas”.)

Aside from this issue, Atty. Tamayo highlighted the bureau’s efforts to improve services in the region, including upgrading its equipment to handle cybercrimes and online scams better. He emphasized that the NBI is committed to ensuring justice through close collaboration with other law enforcement agencies. (EDT/HTB/PIA Zamboanga del Sur)
