PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur (PIA) – Amputees in this province are regaining their independence and mobility through the “New Legs, New Hope, New Life” program, a collaborative initiative between the Provincial Government and the Tzu Chi Foundation.
This initiative showcases the province’s commitment to uplifting the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) community, offering them a renewed sense of hope and dignity. By providing new prosthetic limbs, the program has transformed lives, including that of Elizabeth Pradia, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to walk again after years of relying on her husband for support.
Before receiving her prosthesis, Elizabeth faced significant challenges. Dependent on her husband for day-to-day needs, he would often carry her on his back, a testament to their love and commitment to each other.
Kung lahi pa ang akong nabana, walay siguro gipasagdan nako. Karon nga naa nakoy tiil, malipayon nako kaayo nga muabag-abag sa mga lihukonon,” (If I had married someone else, I would have likely been left behind. But now that I have a leg, I am very happy that I can help with the chores), she said, now able to walk with her prosthetic limb.
This initiative was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the provincial Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the Tzu Chi Foundation. With the full backing of the provincial government, amputees were provided transportation, accommodation, and packed meals during the fitting process.
This program has given me not just legs, but hope,” Elizabeth expressed, her eyes filled with gratitude for the support she received, especially from her husband, who has been by her side throughout her most challenging moments.

The initiative reflects a shared commitment to uplifting the lives of persons with disabilities in the province, giving them a second chance at independence and mobility. The provincial government and its partners remain steadfast in their dedication to ensuring that the PWD community is not left behind.
