MANILA, (PIA) — A new research by a young Filipino scientist is focusing on the desulfurization of fuels to combat the destructive effects of sulfur compounds on human health and the environment.
Dr. Angelo Earvin S. Choi–an accomplished Associate Professor and Research Fellow in the Chemical Engineering Department of De La Salle University (DLSU), and one of the 10 Outstanding Young Scientists recognized by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL)–said his research is primarily focused on the “desulfurization of fuel oils,” which involves the removal of sulfur compounds to prevent air pollution, respiratory problems, and acid rain.
“This is important in order to prevent air pollution that causes respiratory problems or health problems, and this can prevent acid rain as well,” Dr. Choi said. “So, it’s good that we can prevent this so that the crops won’t be destroyed by acid rain and our infrastructure won’t be affected either.”
This work aligns with current environmental standards and provides a viable alternative to the conventional hydrodesulfurization (HDS) method, which requires high pressure, temperature, and expensive catalysts.
With a strong academic background and extensive research experience, Dr. Choi has made significant contributions to the field of desulfurization and environmental sustainability. He has 47 publications (39 percent first-authored) with local and international collaborators, reaching an h-index of 16 and accumulating more than 800 citations.
After completing his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from DLSU in 2016, Dr. Choi pursued his postdoctoral research in Korea, serving as a senior researcher at the University of Ulsan from September 2016 to May 2018. He then became a research professor at the University Core Research Center for Disaster-free and Safety Ocean City Construction from June 2018 to June 2020.
In addition to his research work, Dr. Choi actively participates in church activities, including music and facilitating ministries and Bible discipleship study groups, believing that these activities are vital for personal growth and cultivating a well-rounded individual.
The NAST PHL featured Dr. Choi, along with nine other Outstanding Young Scientists, during the #PilipiNAST Kapehan event in Quezon City recently. They include:
- Dr. Reuel M. Bennett (University of Santo Tomas)
- Dr. Jerome V. Cleofas (De La Salle University)
- Dr. Mark Joseph M. Desamero (University of the Philippines Los Baños)
- Dr. Ramon Christian P. Eusebio (University of the Philippines Los Baños) Dr. Emmanuel P. Hernandez (University of the Philippines Los Baños)
- Dr. Jose Isagani B. Janairo (De La Salle University)
- Dr. Renier G. Mendoza (University of the Philippines Diliman)
- Dr. John Paolo R. Rivera (De La Salle University)
- Mr. Jae Joseph Russell B. Rodriguez (University of the Philippines Los Baños)
The regular #PilipiNAST Kapehan event aims to introduce the programs, activities, awardees, and members of the Academy, as well as address timely issues faced by the country.
New Academicians joining the event include Dr. Joseph S. Masangkay (Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture), Dr. Cleofas R. Cervancia (Entomology), and Dr. Fortunato T. de la Peña (LL.D., D.Tech. honoris causa). Dr. Homer D. Pantua (Biomedical Sciences) will also join as a new Corresponding Member.
Meanwhile, Academician Jaime C. Montoya, President of NAST PHL, welcomed participants and gave an overview of the #PilipiNAST Kapehan. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
