New road boosts livelihoods, local trade in Mindoro town

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) — A newly completed farm-to-market road (FMR) at Barangay Metolza in Naujan town is now making an impact on the lives of farmers, residents and small entrepreneurs in the area.

This after the completion of the multi-million project by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Oriental Mindoro District Engineering Office.

DPWH Oriental Mindoro District Engineer Salvador E. Abad said that the FMR worth P14.9 million features a 579.57-linear meter two-lane road, a cement concrete pavement, an open-lined canal for proper drainage and a culvert crossing to ensure uninterrupted access even during heavy rains

In an interview with DPWH Oriental Mindoro Public Information Officer Elma L. Tiocson, she emphasized the value of the project to the community.

“This farm-to-market road is not just a concrete pavement– it is a lifeline to our farmers. The road has become useful to farmers, residents, Indigenous Peoples, local business owners and entrepreneurs, who now find it easier to bring their produce and goods to commercial centers,” Tiocson said.

She added that the new road significantly reduces travel time by 20 to 30 minutes, which not only makes commuting more efficient but also lowers transportation costs for both farmers and residents.

“It reduces travel time by 20 to 30 minutes, lowers transportation costs and opens up easier and faster access to markets, schools and health services,” she added.

The FMR is currently serving an estimated 150 to 200 daily users, which is expected to boost local economic activity not only in Naujan but also in neighboring barangays. (JJGS/PIA MIMAROPA/Photo from DPWH MIMAROPA)
