ODIONGAN, Romblon (PIA) — The construction of a new roll-on roll-off (RORO) ramp at Corcuera Port, located on Simara Island in Romblon, is scheduled to begin on the fourth week of October 2024.
The project is part of the P20 million initiative by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and is expected to be completed by May 2025.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the project took place on October 17, led by Corcuera Mayor Elmer Fruelda.
He highlighted that the new RORO ramp will play a significant role in enhancing trade and tourism on the island, providing easier access for both locals and visitors.

According to DOTr Undersecretary for Maritime Elmer Sarmiento, the project will be instrumental in supporting more efficient export operations, particularly for local island products such as cattle, sheep, and other agricultural goods.
The project follows the June 2024 signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between Sarmiento and Fruelda, setting the framework for the improvement of Corcuera Port. Once completed, the new RORO ramp is expected to improve the efficiency of sea transport and strengthen the connectivity between Simara Island and nearby islands.
Mayor Fruelda also said that the modernized port will be a major stepping stone in Simara Island’s economic development and a driver for future investments in the municipality. (PJF/PIA MIMAROPA-Romblon)
