INITAO, Misamis Oriental (PIA) — The Department of Tourism (DOT) has kickstarted efforts to boost tourism in Misamis Oriental with the groundbreaking of the province’s first Tourist Rest Area (TRA) in Initao on August 30.
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco highlighted the vast tourism potential of Misamis Oriental, citing its natural beauty and the warm hospitality of the Misamisnons.
“We are here for the groundbreaking of this Tourist Rest Area that marks the beginning of many such facilities to come for Misamis Oriental,” Frasco said.
She explained that the TRA will offer more than just restrooms and a place to rest. It will create jobs, showcase local products, boost local business incomes, and provide information on nearby attractions to enhance the visitors’ overall experience.
The DOT noted that TRA will benefit Initao and help promote nearby tourist destinations.
Similarly, local micro, small, and medium enterprises can showcase and sell their products to tourists at the TRA.
In addition to establishing TRAs, the DOT is partnering with the Department of Public Works and Highways to improve road infrastructure, enhancing access to key tourist spots nationwide for a smoother travel experience.
Frasco commended Misamis Oriental 2nd District Representative Yevgeny Vincente Emano for securing funding for tourism development and praised Governor Peter Unabia for prioritizing tourism as a key driver of economic growth.
She stressed that tourism could play a prime role in achieving the province’s vision of reducing poverty, creating job opportunities, stimulating local businesses, and fostering overall progress.
As Misamis Oriental expands its tourism offerings, including the growing dive tourism, the DOT continues to support the provincial government’s initiatives.
The improvement of tourist infrastructure aims to attract more visitors, boost the local economy, and enhance the province’s reputation as a premier travel destination.
“I am hopeful that this will help achieve the province’s overall goals of using tourism as a tool for economic development, aligned with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision of improving the quality of life for Filipinos through tourism. Investing in infrastructure is crucial for building a strong foundation for tourism in the Philippines, including constructing facilities that provide convenience to our tourists,” Frasco said.
