New e-nutribun variant now in Dgte

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Aug. 10 (PIA) -- A new variant of enhanced nutribun developed by Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is now available in Dumaguete City.

The enhanced nutribun carrot variant is a ready-to-eat nutritious bread with orange speckles.

This e-nutribun is considered the nutrient requirement of children, as it contains natural fibers and has no artificial colors and flavours, said DOST Provincial Director Atty. Gilbert Arbon.

Arbon said the nutribun is expected to help the government fight malnutrition.

It is said that one serving of the bread is 160grams, contains 500kcal, 8 grams of dietary fiber and 86 grams carbohydrates, and has 18 grams protein, 360mg. of calcium, 6mg of iron, 400mg of potassium, 2mg zinc and 350mcg Vitamin A which is 59%, 50%, 60%, 25%, 40%, and 90% of the recommended nutrient intake for children aged 6-9 years old, respectively.

Saint’s Baked Delights, an official technology licensee of the enhanced nutribun, now bakes the enhanced nutribun carrot variety.

The firm is also a producer of the enhanced nutribun squash variety.

After submitting all documentary requirements and after passing the virtual site inspection by Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-FNRI), the firm along with other bakeries and bread manufacturing plants in the country underwent a virtual training on how to bake the enhanced nurtibun carrot variety on June 14 and 16.

Located in Lower Batinguel, Dumaguete City, Saint’s Baked Delights bakery is also a client of the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program of DOST Negros Oriental.

The new variety of enhanced nutribun was virtually launched on April 28, 2021 by DOST-FNRI via Zoom.

It was developed by DOST-FNRI in response to the clamour of enhanced nutribun producers to develop new varieties.

The DOST-FNRI Central Visayas has six enhanced nutribun licensees, of which five firms are located in Cebu while one in Negros Oriental. (JCT/PIA7 Negros Oriental with reports from Engr. Reinhold Jek Abing of DOST)
