Benguet town declares state of calamity

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (PIA)--The municipality of Kabayan is declared under a state of calamity due to the effects of the recent weather disturbances especially the prolonged heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon or “habagat” in the past weeks.

Kabayan Vice Mayor Mircoles Lamses said the municipal council approved Resolution No. 149-21 declaring the state of calamity due to the damages on crops and infrastructures like roads, irrigation and waterworks system  due to  typhoons, low pressure areas, and the monsoon rains.

The local government has recorded P123, 750,000 damages to crops and infrastructure due to the almost one month of heavy rains. There were also 720 affected farmers.

Some of the farm to market roads were rendered impassable and at least 85 percent of the agricultural crops were damaged due to the continuous downpour.   Among the vegetable crops, cauliflower and broccoli were among the most damaged since they cannot survive when soaked in water.
The major roads from Kabayan to the Baguio City and La Trinidad were also damaged that caused the delay of delivery and trade of products to the markets.

Lamses said the declaration of a state of calamity is to allow to use a portion of their calamity fund to assist the affected farmers, who are also still reeling from impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The provincial government of Benguet recently delivered food items as augmentation to the municipality. The PLGU sent 39 sacks of rice and 13 boxes sardines to be utilized as food for work in the 13 barangays.(JDP/ RMC- PIA CAR)
