QUEZON CITY (PIA) -- Delta is still the dominant “variant of concern” (VOC), and it has rapidly overtaken other variants in the country, said Dr. Cynthia Saloma, Executive Director of the University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center (UP-PGC), in a Press Briefing Monday, August 16.
The UP-PGC expert explained that only one case of lambda, classified as “variant of interest,” was detected and it should not cause public alarm.
However, Dr. Saloma emphasized that Delta-VOC is still more alarming.
Data from DOH show an increasing number of detected Delta cases from 5% last week to 8% this week for all samples with lineage.
The impact of Delta VOC is evident nationally in the peak in cases and continued rise in healthcare utilization, thus continued calls to prevent transmission must be done using the Prevent-Detect-Isolate-Treat-Reintegrate (PDITR) strategy.
The government should augment healthcare capacity and ramp up vaccination efforts with clear targets to measure the effectiveness of implementing the PDITR strategy, Dr. Saloma said. (ARR/PIA-IDPD)
