BALBALAN, Kalinga(PIA) - - The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Cordillera Administrative Region has declared 11 barangays of Balbalan as  drug-free  following the  conduct of  performance audit by the Department of the  Interior and Local Government (DILG)-led regional clearing body.

Punong barangays of Ab-abaan, Balantoy, Balbalan Proper, Balbalasang, Buaya, Dao-angan, Gawaan, Mabaca, Maling, Poblacion and Tawang received their respective LGU’s certificate from Balbalan DILG Municipal Local Government Operations Officer  Mediatrix Alino.

The Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Councils   were evaluated based on interventions on a standard set of indicators and validated documents.

Provincial government and the DILG also awarded a plaque of recognition to the Balbalan Anti-Drug Abuse Council for its exemplary performance to eradicate the illegal drugs trade in the area with 95% rating.

This was witnessed by Provincial PDEA Director Rhodelia Macad and Mayor Eric Gonayon.

The mayor shared that they succeeded in ridding the municipality of illegal drugs by getting the support and cooperation of barangay officials and the citizens to strictly watch over visitors and other individuals entering the town and by urging all sectors especially the youth to be vigilant and to report new faces and other unknown persons visiting their place.

“This leadership also worked for the allocation of budget for the health sector through the rural health unit for the conduct of drug testing of drug personalities, laborers including small-scale miners at Gaang mines,” Gonayon said. He added that they were also able to convince known illegal drug users   to surrender and undergo rehabilitation.  (JDP/PAB-PIA CAR, Kalinga with reports from Balbalan Shines)
