PDITR, vaccines key to Covid-19 downtrend

PDITR strategy, vaccines cited for decline of Calabarzon’s Covid cases

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna (PIA) — Aside from the continuous vaccination efforts of the national and local government units, the Office of Civil Defense Calabarzon also attributed the steady decrease in the confirmed Covid-19 infections in Calabarzon to the stringent implementation of the PDITR (Prevent, Isolate, Treat, and Reintegrate) strategies of the National Action Plan from the regional level down to local task forces.

In her townhall report during the second episode of Dagyaw sa Calabarzon held Wednesday, November 17, Civil Defense Calabarzon Regional Director Maria Theresa Escolano bared the efforts being undertaken by the regional and local Covid-19 task forces that led to the decline of Covid-19 infections in the different parts of the region.

“I am proud to say that through the efforts, initiatives, support and cooperation of everyone, Calabarzon has decreased the number of Covid-19 cases and enhance its health care capacity,” Escolano said.

Escolano who is also the Chair of the Regional Task Force Against Covid-19, said the RTF continues to intensify the ‘prevent’ strategy through strengthened information and communication advocacy with the help of Department of Health, Philippine Information Agency, and local government units.

She said they also actively conduct capacity building programs to equip key players on the ground on the policies issued by the National Task Force Against Covid-19 such as the zoning containment and granular lockdown. Among other efforts that Escolano emphasized include the intensified monitoring of minimum public health standards violation and strict border control using the S-Pass.

On testing capacity
The RTF Chair also said that the increased testing capacity in Calabarzon has helped the regional and local task forces to initiate a stringent and timely response against the Covid-19.

With 26 accredited Covid-19 molecular laboratories across the region, Escolano shared that Calabarzon can now process over 9,000 specimens a day with a minimum turnaroud time of 24 hours and maximum of 72 hours.

The RTF Against Covid-19 ensures the continuous operations and establishment of additional molecular laboratory in the region through adequate provision of supplies, and support to assessment and accreditation.

On contact tracing
Contact tracing efforts in the Calabarzon region has also improved to a ratio of 1:15 with the hiring of 16,731 contact tracers regionwide, according to Escolano.

She said the Calabarzon region through the help of the Department of the Interior and Local Government Region (DILG) IV-A in augmenting contact tracers of local government units, is now able to trace 15 close contacts for every case detected.

On healthcare utilization
With the continued decline in Covid-19 cases due to the stringent efforts and whole-of-nation approach implemented by the regional and local task forces, the health care utilization rate in Calabarzon has also been decreasing.

The hospital bed utilization rate in 28 Covid-19 referral hospitals across Calabarzon has gone down to 44.7% as of November 15 while intensive care unit utilization rate decreased to 49.2% for the past week.

Escolano said there is also a notable decrease in the admission of Covid-19 patients to various temporary treatment and moniitoring facilities in the region pushing them to temporarily suspend the operations of two regional TTMFs to consolidate government resources.

Active Covid-19 cases in Calabarzon have been steadily decreasing since the third week of October enabling the national government to place the entire region under the Covid-19 Alert Level 2 until the end of November.

Data from the Department of Health (DOH) showed that active Covid-19 infections in the region significantly dipped to 3,332 on Friday, November 19 with only 169 new cases.

For Escolano, the road to recovery depends on the strict implementation of the Enhanced PDITR+ Vaccination strategies of the National Action Plan.

“Sundin lang po natin lahat yung enhanced PDITR + V sustain the new normal and we are good. Of course, sasamahan din yan ng dasal na sana yung daily vaccination rate ay ma-reach by December,” the RTF Chair said.

Organized by the Department of the Interior and Local Government IV-A, Department of Budget and Management IV-A, Philippine Information Agency Calabarzon, and Partnership of Philippine Support Service Agencies, the Dagyaw 2021 aims to strengthen the public’s trust and awareness on the different programs, projects, and policies of the government through open and public dialogues.

The second episode attended by around 100 stakeholders in the region centered discussions on the pandemic situation, vaccination program, and government efforts geared towards recovery.

The virtual townhall event was also graced by panel discussants from the University of the Philippines Los Baños and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry. — FC, PIA4A
