DTI SoCot warns vs use of substandard Christmas lights

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato (PIA) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in South Cotabato has reminded consumers to always make sure to buy certified indoor Christmas lights to decorate their houses this holiday season.

DTI South Cotabato Provincial Director Rictoniel Reginio urged the public not to patronize uncertified and substandard products.

He said only Christmas lights with the Product Standard (PS) mark and Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) sticker, proof that they are safe and of good quality, should be sold in the market.

“Christmas is coming. Maraming bibili ng Christmas lights. Siguruhin nila na yung bibilhin nila may ICC or PS mark para hindi ma-put in danger ang kanilang mga kabahayan,” Reginio said during PIA’s Performing and Informing radio program.

The PS mark printed on the boxes of Christmas lights has a picture of a globe with a check and letter Q followed by the license number of the manufacturer.

Reginio said to verify if the ICC stickers are genuine, consumers can download on their Android phones an ICC verification application from Playstore that they can use to scan the QR code found on the boxes of Christmas lights.

Upon scanning, information on the lights will appear, matching the information on the box.

DTI South Cotabato also warned retailers that they can be charged with violation of Deceptive Sales Act and Product Standards law for selling uncertified Christmas lights.

“Agresibo po ang ating campaign and enforcement for mga products na hindi conforming sa government standard. Warning lang sa mga business establishment na nagbebenta nito, we are serious, pwede naming hulihin bigla-bigla lang at mapenalize sila,” Reginio said.

He said the agency will continue its monitoring and enforcement activities in the province to ensure the protection of consumers from uncertified and substandard products. (ORVR)
