VIGAN CITY, Nov. 28 (PIA) - - More than 30 teenage mothers, undernourished pregnants, and borderline normal pregnant women of this city received tray of eggs recently through the city government’s “Itlog para kay Nanay at Sanggol na Malusog” program, which is a 90-day egg a day ration to ensure the well-being of each pregnant Vigan City women resident or Bigueña.

Each beneficiary received a tray of eggs and a Nanay Kit which contains iodized salt, cooking oil rich in vitamin A, bread with vitamin A and Iron and other fortified products needed to combat micronutrient deficiency, according to City Nutrition Officer Jeno Josef Figuracion.

He also added the City Health Office, together with the efforts of the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), successfully implemented the six to 23 months of supplemental feeding programs in the various barangays of the city.

As a member of the board of The Forum for Family Planning and Development, Sangguniang Panlungsod Member (SPM) Janina Medina-Fariñas assured the continuous support of the city government in providing best services and programs that pregnant women deserve especially in these trying times.

“Getting pregnant at a young age doesn’t mean it’s the end of your life, instead it is the start of a brand new chapter as you embrace parenthood. Remember, every child is a blessing no matter when they arrive,” SPM Janina Medina-Fariñas said during the activity.

“When dealing with teenage pregnancies, we can often be quick to judge young parents and their life choices; but what needs to be asked is where did we as adults go wrong in offering them Reproductive Health education, guidance and improving their quality of life? I commit to empowering young women and young mothers by ensuring they have the help, support and understanding that they need in life,” she added in a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in Ilocos Region recognized the relentless efforts and exemplary performance of the city government  in nutrition program implementation during the Gawad Parangal ng Nutrisyon Rehiyon Uno 2021 on November 26.

The city government was awarded with the following: Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner on Nutrition; Local Nutrition Action of the Year of Region I; Local Nutrition Program Coordinator of the Year Region I; Outstanding BNS of Region I (First Runner Up); Special Award on First 1000 Days Adopter; Special Award Consistent Malnutrition Reduction; and Special Award Nutrition Champions during Covid-19. (JCR/JPD/JMCQ, PIA Ilocos Sur)
