Iligan, LDN cope with PPA result via intervention programs

ILIGAN CITY PIA)--Following the release of the Provincial Product Accounts (PPA) results, the local government units of Iligan City and Lanao del Norte province both presented intervention programs to cope with their economic performance.

City Planning and Development Coordinator Venerando Bordeos said during the PPA dissemination forum Thursday, December 9, that the coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic has visibly affected not just the local stage but as well as the global arena.   

“All of us experienced this COVID-19. This really affected the economic performance of Iligan City, especially our tourism from 2019 to 2020, and the construction because a lot of construction firms have stopped their operation for certain months,” he said

With this, Bordeos bared that the local government here prepared a program to support its impacted micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Further, assistance was offered for agriculture and fishery production, and the tourism industry while pursuing the construction of farm-to-market roads and development programs for skills training. 

He also shared that with the Inter-agency Task Force (IATF) on COVID-19, they have concurred to minimize the restrictions of development and services to slowly open the economy of the city. 

Lanao del Norte Development Management Officer Anna Mae Arreglado Oro likewise cited the pandemic as the main reason attributing to the decline of the economic performance of the province.

“Mostly in 2020, sa [for] industry and services, naubos gyud ang data nato sa [our data was really down in the] province of Lanao del Norte and it is very understandable because of the pandemic,” she said. 

Oro has earlier stressed that the province is majorly producing agri-fishery products as its economic strength lies in agriculture, fishery and forestry sector with 40% of its total land area devoted to crop production and other agricultural activities, implying it is producing agri-fishery products.

As such, the provincial government plotted major efforts such as the establishment of Provincial Grains and Processing Center and the Provincial Corn Processing & Marketing Service Center, enhancement of learning sites for practical agriculture, and implementation of the Dimaporo Farmers Income Enhancement Program (DFIEP), among others.

Apart from these, culture and arts is promoted and farm and sports tourism are developed considering the province is also home to tourist destinations. 

Initiating these, a vision is hoped to be achieved by 2040 wherein Lanao del Norte will be a sustainably developed agri-fishery and ecocultural sports tourism destination in a community of God-loving, resilient and socially cohesive people with local governance anchored on inclusive growth. 

As per the PPA results, the economy of the Iligan City here grew by 1.4% in 2020 while the province of Lanao del Norte contracted by 4.7% in the same year. (CRG/PIA-Lanao del Norte)
