PopCom strengthens advocacy to guide adolescents

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) -- The Commission on Population and Development - Cordillera Administrative Region (PopCom) is strengthening its advocacy to help and guide adolescents in making sound decision and avoid   early pregnancy.

During the Kapihan for the 53rd PopCom Anniversary celebration, PopCom-CAR Regional Director Magdalena Abellera said that they have social protection program for the adolescents to ensure that the children will have a better future.

"Because of our data and statistics na pabata nang bata 'yung nagbubuntis at nanganganak, isa sa milestone nga natin is really stronger advocacy in helping our adolescents. Sabi natin, have the right choices and decisions. Enable them to make responsible choices and decisions in life," she said.

Aside from   Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning program, the agency also Adolescents Health and Development program.

Abellera said they have to ensure protection and provide protective services to the children for them to avoid teenage pregnancy and to continue their aspirations in life.

"Let's not only start with the couples but habang bata pa sila, we instill the values, plan families, responsible parenthood," she said.

 Abellera  explained taht from the Married Couples of Reproductive Age program, there had been a shift to the broader concerns of other sectors of the population including women of reproductive age.

Population she said is not only health intervention, economic intervention but also a poverty reduction strategy. Statistics show that poorer families have more children and this is also related to education. The intervention is   education component, hence Popcom CAR has strengthened partnership with the    Department of Education   on population education, Abellera said.
