Province, City excel in 2020 regional nutrition situation

MAASIN CITY (PIA) -- In almost all the rankings on nutrition standing as linked to constant factors like weight, height, and age, this city and the province of Southern Leyte bested their counterpart cities and provinces around the region.

Based on the 2020 regional nutrition situation, on the weight for height/length prevalence of wasted and severely wasted indicator, the province got the lowest rank at 3.1% while the city at 0.8%.

In this field, the province of Northern Samar topped the list at 4.4%, Leyte at 4.2%, Samar at 3.5%, Biliran and Eastern Samar tied at 3.4%, while for cities, Borongan had it at 8.1%, Tacloban a far second at 5.8%, Ormoc at 4.7%, Catbalogan at 4%, Calbayog at 3.8%, and Baybay at 3.4%.

For the category height for age prevalence of stunted and severely stunted, the province got  the lowest 11.2% mark, with top 1 Samar at 26.1% followed by Leyte at 16.2%, Northern Samar at 16.0%, Eastern Samar at 15.4%, and Biliran at 14.6%.

For cities, Maasin City got 6.4%, while Borongan took the lead at 20.9%, Tacloban at 20.8%, Baybay at 17.3%, Ormoc at 17.0%, Catbalogan at 15.6% , and Calbayog at 14.0%.

On weight for age of underweight, severely underweight, Samar province had a prevalence of 11.2%, Northern Samar a far second at 7.6%, Leyte 7.2%, Eastern Samar at 6.8%, Biliran at 6.6%, and Southern Leyte at 5%.

For cities, Borongan got 11.4%, Baybay at 8.7%, Tacloban at 8.1%, Calbayog at 6.9%, Ormoc at 6.7%, Catbalogan at 6.3%, and Maasin at 3.2%.

On the prevalence of overweight/obesity, Southern Leyte  province was rated at 5.6%, the only nutrition aspect the province is leading, followed by Eastern Samar at 5.3%, Leyte at 5%, Samar at 4.6%, Northern Samar at 4%, and Biliran at 3.6%.

Borongan still topped for cities at 10%, Tacloban at 7.7%, Catbalogan at 7.3%, Ormoc at 4.9%, Baybay at 3.2%, Calbayog at 1.9%, and Maasin at 1.6%, maintaining its good nutrition standing.

These results were presented by Annabelle Limbagan of the National Nutrition Council 8, during the recent city nutrition committee meeting held at the mayor’s office this month.

In summary, Limbagan said malnutrition in Eastern Visayas is slowly decreasing, but stunting among all age groups is high, Samar province remains high in stunting and underweight, and Southern Leyte emerges to be high in obesity. (LDL/MMP/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
