PhilFIDA Sorsogon opens doors to public with new facilities

SORSOGON CITY (PIA) – The Philippine Fiber Industry Authority (PhilFIDA) has opened its doors to the public, particularly to abaca farmers, researchers, investors, and even tourists, following the recent inauguration of its new building and facilities in Brgy. Cogon in Juban, Sorsogon,

According to Mary Anne R. Molina, PhilFIDA Bicol regional director, the agency promotes the development of natural fibers in the country like abaca and delivers technical service as well as distribution and reproduction of plants in tissue culture methods.

She said that tissue culture is a state of the art method or technique in producing abaca planting materials because from a single sucker more than 1,000 pcs of abaca planting materials are produced on a 12-month cycle.

“It’s a rapid way of propagating abaca, We can produce more and more farmers are benefited,” she added.

The new PhilFIDA complex features its new tissue culture laboratory and the four-hectare abaca nursery farm.

Molina said Sorsogon used to be a big producer of abaca in Bicol region, which is also noted as number one producer of abaca in the country.

“PhilFIDA’s work is very important as many abaca farmers are benefiting from our researches and technology,” she also said.

The provincial government envisions the four-hectare farm to be a model and demo farm for the Provincial Agriculturist Office and for the seedlings of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office.

PhilFIDA is an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture (DA). (BAR-PIA5/Sorsogon)
