AFP chief lauds 5ID's efforts vs Reds, other accomplishments

GAMU, Isabela (PIA) - -  Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Andres Centino congratulated the 5th Infantry Division (5ID) for its effective employment of various capabilities of its component units under Joint Task Force TALA which resulted to notable accomplishments in support to the government’s whole-of-nation-approach.

Centino, who was the guest of honor during the culmination of the 5ID’s 41st anniversary yesterday, said that the Joint Task Force TALA was instrumental in the AFP’s accomplishments in terms of internal operations.

One of which according to the army official, was the successful conduct of the operations in September 2021, which resulted to the dismantle of New People's Army (NPA) lair in barangay Dungeg in Santa Teresita, Cagayan and leaving five members of the terrorist group killed during an encounter.

Centino noted that the successful operation was due to the utilization of ‘game changer assets’ and  synergized conduct of focused military operations, intensified intelligence and effective coordination with other law enforcement agencies

A withdrawal of support of former CTGs symphatizers, the recovery of over 200 firearms and the neutralization of Ka Peping, the head of the Regional Operations Depot KRCV Valley and two other key members of the Komite as a result the encounter last month in Sto. Niño, Cagayan,” Centino said.

The official also lauded the efforts of the division in the rehabilitation and reintegration of former rebels to our society to become productive citizens of the country.

“Your initiative to proactively look into the welfare of this former rebels through the Happy Farmville Community. Dito lang sa 5ID ang ganitong concept of integrating former rebels thru farming. This initiative enabled them to hone their skills and potential for livelihood, continue their education, and still peaceful local ways of living in their communities,” the official added.

The "Happy Farm Ville" which houses at least 56 Former Rebels  from Isabela is a transitional program for the former rebels that integrates farming activities through the initiative of the 5ID in cooperation with TESDA, PLGU, the Department of Agriculture (DA) and other stakeholders.

“Your programs to employ former rebels in partnership with other government agencies within the camp are indeed praiseworthy showing their contributions in nation-building,” Centino added.

On the other hand, 5ID Commander, MGen. Laurence E Mina, has recognized the startroopers of the present for keeping the foundation sturdier as each year passes by as he took the challenge to keep improving the foundations that the past startroopers have built to sustain the standard of excellence.

“The 5th Infantry “Star” Division has gone a long way and the command aims to sustain the standard of excellence that we owe to the startroopers who came before us, and the excellence that we continuously inculcate to the performing startroopers of today. This indoctrination resulted in the confiscation and recovery of 264 anti-personnel mines, 213 high-powered & 115 low-powered firearms," Mina said.

On the same occasion, Centino led the inauguration and blessing of the camp’s newly inaugurated San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila chapel which according to the army official was a good project as it will also cater to civilians residing near the camp who wish to attend masses. (MDCT/ PIA Cagayan)
