Farmers and Fisherfolks Day celebrated in Ifugao

LAGAWE, Ifugao - - The provincial government thru its agriculture office recently led the celebration of the Farmers and Fisherfolks’ Day to pay tribute to this sector for their labors and toils to provide sustainable food for every Ifugao table.


More than a hundred farmers and fisherfolks and some personnel from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and provincial officials joined the event at the Provincial Fisheries Office in Lamut town, with the theme “Utilizing Adoptive Local Science for Food Security.”


Vice Governor Glenn Prudenciano said that the occasion is the right venue for the concerned sectors to meet and talk together for a collaborative efforts among farmers, fisherfolks and other stakeholders.  


“When given the opportunity to do something, we should really think out seriously and be united not only as farmers but as people of Ifugao. We should talk what we can contribute to solve the problem. We should be all active and innovative,” Prudenciano stated.


The Farmers and Fisherfolk’s Month   pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 33was first celebrated in May 1989 to give tribute and recognition to the outstanding contributions of agricultural laborers to the development of the local agriculture sector,  Nazario Tuguinay of the Provincial Agriculture Office said.  


Giving it emphasis and local color, the provincial government adopted Provincial Ordinance No. 2019-16 authored by board member Geronimo Bimohya declaring every first Friday of May as Farmers and Fisherfolk’s Day in recognition of the contribution of farmers and fishers.  


Agriculture remains a main source of income among Ifugaos. (JDP/MB- PIA CAR, Ifugao)
