SAN FERNANDO CITY, June 12 (PIA) – Simultaneous flag-raising and wreath laying ceremonies were staged in the Province of La Union on Sunday morning in commemoration of the 124th Philippine Independence Day.
Sangguniang Panlalawigan members of the Provincial Government of La Union namely Nancy Bacurnay, Gerard Ostrea, Jennifer Mosuela-Fernandez, and Geraldine Ortega led the commemoration along with other department heads and employees in the capitol grounds.
Governor Francisco Emmanuel Ortega III in a video message said the celebration is a great day to revisit history and retrospect how heroes and ancestors bravely fought for the country’s freedom.
He also relatedly cited how the people of La Union had risen against all odds, enduring calamities even in the midst of the threats of the COVID-19 pandemic for the past two years.
“Ito ang nagsisilbing inspirasyon namin sa Pamahalaang Panlalawigan upang higit na magsipag at maging determinado sa pagsusulong ng mga programa na magdadala ng tunay na kasarinlan para sa mga kaprobinsiyaan,” Ortega said.
He added, “Sa pamamagitan ng pagkamit ng kalayaan mula sa kahirapan na magdadala at magpapanatili ng sama-samang pag-unlad tungo sa mas matatag na La Union.”
Similarly, officials and personnel of local government units, along with representatives of line agencies such as the Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, and other stakeholders gathered at the city plaza to conduct the activity.
Gun salutes were also given to honor the bravery and heroism of ancestors who had fought for the country’s freedom.
Meanwhile, the observance of Independence Day every 12th of June is pursuant to Proclamation No. 28 series of 1962 issued by Former President Diosdado Macapagal. (JCR/AMB/CGRC, PIA Region 1)
