VIGAN CITY, June 29 (PIA) – Ilocos Sur incoming governor Jeremias “Jerry” Singson urged the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) on Monday to be more aggressive with their programs against illegal drugs.
"Illegal drugs should not infiltrate the province, I appeal to the agencies in-charge. We do not want to see the shadows of drug pushers in Ilocos Sur," he said during the Joint Meeting of the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC), Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council (PADAC), Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC), and Provincial Development Council (PDC) at the Provincial Farmers Livelihood Development Center here.
From April to June, PDEA Ilocos Sur Provincial Officer Anabel Cabarles reported that five anti-illegal drug operations were conducted where six persons were arrested and 13 cases were filed.
Cabarles also presented that 448 barangays have been drug-cleared among the 631 drug-affected barangays, and 18 of the 32 drug-affected municipalities are now drug-cleared while the two cities - Vigan and Candon - remain drug-affected.
The governor-elect said PDEA-Ilocos Sur must issue certificates to the barangays as soon as they are deemed drug-cleared to motivate other barangays to step up and follow suit.
Currently, there are five Balay Silangan Reformation Centers in the province including the newly-inaugurated center in Barangay Ayusan, Santa Lucia, whereas there are proposed centers in the cities of Candon and Vigan as well as in the towns of Santa Catalina and Magsingal.
Cabarles also noted that the Balay Silangan in Tagudin produced 18 graduates as of May 2022.
Moreover, the incoming governor pointed out the crimes committed by illegal drug users and underscored the importance of the interventions initiated by the Philippine National Police (PNP) to Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office (ISPPO) Director Police Colonel Wilson Doromal.
He reiterated that the PNP must strengthen their efforts on arresting law-offenders to minimize the number of innocent crime victims.
ISPPO reported a total of three buy bust operations conducted and one search and seizure by virtue of warrant, four persons arrested and 14 who surrendered.
Meanwhile, the governor-elect advised the agencies who attended the meeting to come up with a program over the radio to disseminate information and encourage the entire populace to participate and support the initiatives and projects of the government. (JCR/AMB/ATV, PIA Ilocos Sur)
