MANILA, (PIA) -- The Office of Civil Defense-National Capital Region (OCD-NCR) on Friday rallied the whole of Metro Manila to unite and work hand in hand towards the common goal of achieving disaster resilience and fostering development in the capital region.

The OCD-NCR made this call on Friday, July 1, which marks the start of the observance of the "National Disaster Resilience Month" or NDRM.

According to OCD-NCR Regional Director Romulo Cabantac, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, through the Office of Civil Defense, again leads the month-long celebration of NDRM starting from July 1 to 29, 2022 with the theme: "Sambayanang Pilipino, nagkakaisa tungo sa katatagan at maunlad na kinabukasan," which seeks to "advocate unity towards resilience and sustainable development."

Cabantac said part of OCD-NCR's thrust is to highlight the importance of a united effort in the attainment of making communities ready and safe, adding that cooperation among residents will do a great deal in helping the government achieve its goal of creating disaster-resilient and risk-concious communities.

Part of agency-led activities for the month include the regular posting of announcements on NDRM on the Civil Defense-NCR Facebook page; various training courses for local government units, barangays, and business groups; a poster making contest on July 11; "Juan For Treesilience" tree planting activity on July 15; and a family preparedness webinar on July 29.

The OCD-NCR is also calling on the public to participate in all NDRM-related activities, as well as in the programs and activities of other Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC)-member agencies that seek to strengthen the resilience of the communities.

Likewise, local government DRRMCs, and Barangay Committees are tasked to implement activities and programs relative to NDRM.

It can be recalled that Executive Order No. 29 signed by former president Rodrigo Duterte on June 28, 2017, mandates the observance of NDRM "throughout the country through the conduct of activities relative to the building of disaster resilience covering the four thematic areas." (PIA-NCR)
