Talisayan maintains smoke-free status for 13 years

MISAMIS ORIENTAL (PIA) – The municipality of Talisayan, Misamis Oriental has maintained its smoke-free status for 13 years, implementing a total smoking ban in all public areas.

In an episode of Talakayan sa PIA, media forum at SM City Cagayan de Oro, Talisayan Municipal Health Officer Dr. Gay Andanas shared the importance of local government legislative support to implement an advocacy.

“In 2009, the municipality of Talisayan had approved an ordinance that makes our community 100% smoke-free; which means we have no areas where people are allowed to smoke,” said Dr. Andanas.

Meanwhile, she shared, Talisayan Mayor Rommel Maslog never hesitated to support the advocacy and has seen the importance of being a smoke-free municipality, having healthy constituents, and being a role model to children.

With the municipal ordinance implemented, Talisayan became one of the municipalities to receive a Red Orchid award from the Department of Health region 10.

“The Municipality of Talisayan is one of the 1st municipalities to receive a Red Orchid Award in 2009 and then by 2011 we received the Hall of Fame. To date, our town has been smoke-free for 13 years,” the health officer said.

The Municipal Health Office also incorporated No-Smoking advocacy during COVID 19 vaccination.

“During vaccination, we always ask the person if he is smoking and advise him to stop to strengthen their immunity. The purpose of vaccination is to protect their lungs from COVID-19 and when a person smokes, it weakens their lungs. After vaccination, we advise them not to smoke for three weeks and it helps them to quit smoking," she said.

They have seen a decrease in the smoking population since COVID vaccination. Andanas further shared that some nearby municipalities are already adopting their good practices and implementing their own anti-smoking campaign. (JAKAraña/PIA10)
