Magsaysay youth taught on disaster preparedness

MAGSAYSAY, Davao del Sur  (PIA)—A local chief executive cited the need for awareness and readiness of the younger generation in the community on different calamities like earthquakes and floods that happened in their area.

Mayor Ronie Sarande of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur said it is important that the younger constituents in their town must know the hazards and must have the capability to cope with it.

The municipal government of Magsaysay sponsored a three-day capability building on disaster management for the Katipunan ng mga Kabataan of LGU-Magsaysay.

He recalled that during the occurrence of the earthquakes, some of the residents panicked and surrendered their fate to God.

Sarande said the awareness training is done to help more people to be ready because like a thief at night, earthquakes happen without warning.

He also recalled that during the time of earthquakes in 2019, many of the victims were underage.  He said the learnings gained for the past three days will no longer be forgotten and it will be integrated in one’s life.

Sarande said the training prepares the youth to be heroes since they will surely be happy when they rescue people amidst the disaster.

He said the municipal government prepares everyone to be heroes in their own right.

“We are preparing you to become heroes to your families and to your community,” Sarande said.

Sarande also noticed that there were participants in the training who brought along motorcycles with them even they were underage to drive and be issued driver’s license.

He noted that as the technology modernized, the youth tend to adapt with it to the point that they no longer allow their parents to reprimand them.

“Many of those who figure in vehicular accidents are the youth,” Sarande said.  (PIA XI- Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)
