Wear face mask, health official reminds public

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato (PIA) -- Provincial health officer Dr. Rogelio Aturdido Jr. reiterates reminder for the public to continue wearing face mask even in public places.

This, despite the lifting of mandatory wearing of face coverings in open areas based on Executive Order No. 3 issued by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

President Marcos signed EO No. 3, "Allowing Voluntary Wearing of Facemasks in Outdoor Settings and Reiterating the Continued Implementation of Minimum Health Standards During the State of Public Health Emergency Relative to COVID-19 Pandemic"  on September 12.

Dr. Aturdido Jr. said, it is not yet time to lower the guard down against the coronavirus disease, considering that about 50 percent of the current COVID-19 cases in South Cotabato were acquired in outdoor areas.

"There is an order that eases the mandate on wearing of face mask in open spaces. Before this, I have said that if you want to remove your face mask in open spaces, make sure that such areas are really open and that physical distancing is ensured," Dr. Aturdido said.  "If physical distancing cannot be assured, please put on your face mask."

People cannot be assured that the people they meet in open areas, such as public markets and streets, are free of COIVD-19; thus, wearing of face mask remains essential for protection against infection, he explained further.

"Please help us contain this virus. We really need the help of everyone, especially now that our cases is gradually increasing," he appealed.

Citing data from the Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the South Cotabato Integrated Provincial Health Office, he said, around 20 individuals test positive of the viral disease daily in the province, including students since in-person classes resumed.

As of September 21, 2022, South Cotabato has recorded 23,416 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Of these, 143 are active. (PIA 12)
