CITY PF ILAGAN, Isabela (PIA) - - The Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 2 (DA RFO 2) through its Livestock Program Division has distributed 120 sentinel piglets to identified hog raisers in towns with no cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) for at least 90 days.
DA-2 Regional Executive Director Narciso Edillo said the towns of Cabagan, Delfin Albano, Sta Maria, Sto Tomas, and Tumauini and the City of Ilagan were identified by DA with no ASF cases in the last 90 days so the hog raisers in the said localities were identified as beneficiaries of sentinel piglets.
The distribution of sentinel piglets was led by RED Edillo held on September 22, 2022.
“This is a prelude to swine repopulation program to increase hog production, and subsequently stabilize the supply and prices of pork,” Edillo said.
“We have been implementing the sentinelling and repopulation program in all provinces of Region 2, where we also launched early this year the ‘Bantay ASF sa Barangay’ or BABay ASF program, in partnership with hog raisers’ groups, the different provincial government units and municipalities, private sector, academe, and veterinary associations,” Narciso said.
He said the initial budget of the sentinelling component of the repopulation program is P400 million, which is part of the P2.4-billion swine repopulation program in the region.
Edillo said another P200 million is allocated for the swine breeder multiplier farms to ensure a continuous source of piglets for the subsequent expansion of the swine repopulation program, while the remaining P1.2B is allotted for the biosecurity and surveillance program of the BAbay ASF.
