QUEZON CITY (PIA) – Focusing on a tsunami scenario in the city, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) with the City of Paranaque led the ceremonial pressing of button and the full-scale exercise for the fourth quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) today (10 November) with the staging area at the Paranaque Fisherman’s Wharf in La Huerta or Bulungan Market.
"By simulating a tsunami scenario based on a hypothetical Magnitude 8.3 earthquake, we shall be able to assess our preparedness and capability to mount a coordinated and effective response to minimize potential losses in lives and properties in such an eventuality," Parañaque City Mayor Eric Olivarez said.
The full-scale exercise conducted showcased Parañaque City’s Contingency Plan for tsunami and evacuation procedures in the local community and services specifically for the fisherfolk and vulnerable groups.
It also demonstrated the combined efforts for Water Search and Rescue and Air Rescue Capabilities of the Philippine National Police MARIG, Philippine Coast Guard, and the Philippine Air Force.
The event also gave emphasis to the natural conservation, specifically the nurturing of mangroves, as one of the means to protect coastal communities. In particular, Parañaque City also has a natural protected area that serves as sanctuary to various species of migratory and endemic birds.
NDRRMC calls on all LGUs to follow Parañaque's example of taking care of the mangroves as a mutually beneficial endeavor for both nature and the coastal communities.
Present during the event are Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Undersecretary and Administrator Raymundo Ferrer, Paranaque Congressman Edwin Olivarez, Department of Science and Technology-PhiVolcs Officer-in-Charge Dir. Teresito Bacolcol, Department of the Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Serafin Baretto Jr. and
The adoption of the earthquake and tsunami scenario is in support also of the annual celebration of World Tsunami Awareness Day every November 5. (PIA-NCR)
