33 Pangasinenses qualify for DOST-JLSS scholarship

DAGUPAN CITY (PIA) – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) announced that 33 Pangasinense college students have qualified for the Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) program of DOST’s Science Education Institute (SEI).

Bernalyn Martinez, project assistant II of DOST-Pangasinan, said among the 178 examinees who took the qualifying exam on August 27, only 33 of them qualified and will get to enjoy two to three year benefits depending on their course.

The JLSS program is divided into three scholarship program categories such as the Republic Act (R.A.) 7687 or the Science and Technology Undergraduate Scholarship program, R.A. 10612 or Act Expanding the Coverage of S&T scholarship, and the DOST-SEI Merit Scholarship program.

Martinez said of the total Pangasinense qualifiers, 10 students qualified under R.A. 7687, 15 qualified for the Merit Scholarship program, while eight students passed the R.A. 10612.

The JLSS program aims to ensure a steady, adequate supply of qualified S&T human resources who can steer the country towards national progress.

Qualifiers who will avail of the scholarship will enjoy the scholarship privileges such as P7,000 monthly stipend, P10,000 learning materials and/or connectivity allowance and other minimal allowances covering transportation, thesis and graduation fee as well as tuition fee amounting to P40, 000 per year for those enrolled in private college or university.

The scholars will be required to render service to the country, preferably in Region 1, after their graduation for a period equivalent to the number of years they have enjoyed the scholarship.

Qualifiers under R.A. No. 7687 and Merit Scholarship are expected to work along their fields of specialization.

Martinez said those under R.A. 10612, which supports the K to 12 program, shall serve as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) teachers in any public or private high school in the country after they graduate.

The new JLSS scholars will get to enjoy their scholarship perks effective on the first semester of academic year 2022-2023. (JCR/AMB/EMSA/PIA Pangasinan)
