Laoag gov’t offers lot for new city jail

LAOAG CITY (PIA) – The City Government of Laoag and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Laoag City  are entering into a Usufruct Agreement for a 4,661 square meter (sqm) land that will be used for the construction of the new City Jail.

Mayor Michael Marcos Keon said the present city jail, located in Barangay 1 San Lorenzo is about 1,000 sqm and was considered “too small”.

He said that a bigger space for the city jail will result in more programs for the Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) that will be implemented by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

“Kapag nakumpleto na yung bagong city jail, mas magiging conducive ito at magiging tuloy-tuloy yung mga programs ng ibibigay ng ating bureau at siyudad para sa mga PDLs,” J/INSP. Jayson Aquino, officer-in-charge of the Laoag City Jail, said.

Aside from the bigger space, Aquino said that the transfer would also be beneficial for the schools, residential areas, and government agencies that are nearby the premises.

Keon assured that the City Government is also prepared to give funding support to the construction of the new city jail building.

Laoag City Jail was awarded as the Best City Jail in the whole of Region 1 for the third quarter of the year 2022 by the BJMP Regional Office 1. (JCR/JPD/EJFG, PIA Ilocos Norte)
