QUEZON CITY, (PIA) --“Our small actions, when united, can make a long way in our fight against climate change.”
Thus, said DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) Director Ronilda R. Co during the recently conducted 6th National Climate Change Conference (NCCC).
“We believe that by encouraging participation of learners and DepEd personnel in climate change adaptation and mitigation, we can have a deeper grasp of climate change, especially the challenges and opportunities confronting us,” Co added.
During the event, the Department of Education highlighted the role of education towards climate change among the participants that include students, employees and other stakeholders.
Co, in his lecture left two important questions to encourage climate change action among the participants: “If Climate Can Change, why can’t I? If climate can change, why can’t we?”
Highlights of the three-day conference include climate change webinars, climate action stories, and climate dialogues with authorities on climate change and human rights who acknowledged the important role of the academic community in climate change education.
Keynote speaker and University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Chancellor Dr. Jose V. Camacho Jr. said academic institutions really play an important role in climate action, particularly in giving instruction and dissemination.
Camacho cited the UPLB climate change program as one of the priority areas considered in the UPLB-AGORA (Accelerating Growth through One Research and Extension in Action) research and extension agenda.
Meanwhile, DepEd Regional Directors Estela L. Cariño (CAR), Tolentino G. Aquino (Region I), Ramir B. Uytico (Region VI), at Ruth L. Fuentes (Region IX) shared their experiences in taking active part in the campaign against climate change.
Students for their part, pledge to do their share in protecting the environment and fight against climate change.
