VP Sara presides 153rd LCC Meeting

QUEZON CITY— Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, who is also the Chairperson of the Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC), presided over the 153rd LCC Meeting held on Feb 2, 2023, through zoom video conference.

Highlighted during the meeting are the LCC programs and activities that will be implemented in 2023, such as updates on the LCC Localization, review of Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS), and other vital issues that link to improving literacy programs in the country.

House Committee on Basic Education and Culture Chairperson Cong. Roman Romulo reported during the meeting that the finalization of the bill establishing the National Literacy Council or House Bill No. 930 will be on the third reading in the lower house of Congress by the end of February or March of this year.  

Meanwhile, Dr. Tuga of the Philippine Normal University (PNU) emphasized the important role of local governments in strengthening literacy in families, particularly for the youth who have returned to the government and are currently living in the relocation areas.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) leadership promised to focus on the issue raised, being one of the members of the resettlement government that is ready to provide services to the public.

Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Assistant National Statistician Wilma Guillen answered some of the questions relating to the FLEMMS review. She said that the agency has challenges with regard to the research budget. Subsequently, Romulo expressed support together with Senate to meet the said budgetary requirement.

The meeting was attended by LCC members and representatives, Congressman Roman Romulo of the House of Representatives, Dr. Bert Tuga of PNU, Undersecretary Gina Gonong of the Department of Education (DepEd), Prof. Flora Arellano of E-Net Philippines, Deputy-Director General Karl Louie Fajardo of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Dir. Anna Liza Bonagua of DILG, Assistant Dir. Edgardo Aranjuez of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), and Atty. Katryn Cadiente represented Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian of the Senate.

Assistant Secretary G.H. Ambat also participated in the meeting and Asec. Alma Ruby Torio of DepEd-Curriculum and Teaching Strand, Assistant National Statistician Wilma Guillen of PSA, and other guests from LCC member agencies. (JLB/PIA-PMD)
