NHCP HOSTS PINGKIAN LECTURES WITH DR. ZEUS SALAZAR

ERMITA, MANILA – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) recently started the Piqued on Pingkian Commemorative Lectures in commemoration for the 150th Birth Anniversary of Emilio Jacinto.

Entitled “Ang Kartilya ng Katipunan: Isang Batayan ng Kaisipang Ideolohikal ng KKK,” the inaugural lecture was given by Zeus A. Salazar, Ph.D held live last 21 April 2025 at the NHCP Central Office, T.M. Kalaw Ave.

Dr. Zeus Salazar is a historian and anthropologist from the University of the Philippines Diliman and the Sorbonne University of Paris. He is best known for his seminal work on the use of the “Pantayong Pananaw” in the writing of Philippine History. Since the 1970s, he promoted the use of the Filipino’s own perspective and own language to make sense of our history.

Emilio Jacinto took on the name ‘Pingkian’ (meaning flint or tinder) soon after he joined the Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangang, Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK) where he quickly became one of the organization’s top leaders. He authored the Kartilya ng Katipunan which earned him the moniker “Brains of the Katipunan.”

The lecture was streamed via FB Live at the NHCP Facebook Page. Event partners Samahang Pangkasaysayan ng Tondo, Bagong Kasaysayan, Inc., the Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Philippine Studies Program along with public historian Dr. Michael ‘Xiao’ Chua, and musical artist Dr. Felipe de Leon Jr. were at the lecture, which was also a program commitment to the Local Historical Committees Network (LHCN).

The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
