NHCP ‘Pag-Asa sa Gitna ng Kalayaan’ Exhibit on the West Philippine Sea at Adamson University

ADAMSON UNIVERSITY, Manila – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Museo El Deposito, National Library of the Philippines (NLP) and Adamson University (AdU) through the Pangkasaysayang Samahan ng Adamson University (PASAdU) and Adamson University Cultural Affairs Office bring together ‘Pag-Asa sa Gitna ng Kalayaan’ Exhibit on the West Philippines Sea (WPS) on 14 August 2024, Wednesday, 3:00 PM at the Adamson University Art Gallery, 900 San Marcelino St., Ermita, Manila.

The exhibit features images from the WPS by photographer Paul Quiambao, and cartographic treasures from the National Library of the Philippines. Additionally, the flag of Free Territory of Freedomland, from Tomas Cloma, territory founder in the Spratly’s (now Kalayaan Group of Islands), and facsimiles of an 1875 map of the Philippines from Ret. Associate Justice Antonio Carpio along with the 1734 Murillo-Velarde map touted as ‘the Mother of all Philippine Maps’ from Mr. Mel Velarde can be viewed.

In celebration of the eighth-year anniversary of the Arbitral Award from the Arbitral Tribunal at the Hague last July, and with WPS events in the news, the exhibit serves as an eye-opener to understanding our rights and maritime entitlements in the West Philippines Sea as provided in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Last month a lecture was held at the NLP with speakers Ret. Assoc. Justice Carpio and Atty. Fretti Ganchoon of the DOJ. The exhibit will run until 30 August 2024.

The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures. (NHCP)
