IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay (PIA) – The National Irrigation Administration (NIA)-9 highlighted its accomplishments during the recent episode of Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas, underscoring the importance of irrigation projects in driving agricultural productivity.

Engr. June Nathaniel Plaza, regional manager of NIA-9, presented the agency’s accomplishments over the past years and ongoing initiatives, focusing on the development of irrigation systems in Zamboanga Peninsula (ZamPen).
In addition to irrigation projects, NIA conducted other initiatives like contract farming, medical missions, and the recent launching of Kadiwa sa NIA’s Bagong Bayaning Magsasaka Rice (BBMR). These efforts aimed to support farmers and improve their livelihoods.
BBMR offers rice to vulnerable groups at an affordable Php29.00 per kilo, supporting struggling families while valuing farmers’ contributions. This initiative ensures that farmers’ efforts benefit the entire community.
Plaza assured the initiative will continue as long as the community values and supports its benefits.
“The Kadiwa sa NIA, offering rice at PhP29.00 per kilo, will continue as long as it has public support, providing essential services while uplifting the lives of farmers,” he said.
The Php29.00 per kilo rice, while available to everyone, prioritizes vulnerable groups such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities, solo parents, and beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
As a key rice-producing region, the agency reaffirmed its commitment to providing accessible irrigation services that can boost the income and productivity of local farmers.
NIA remains optimistic in delivering sustainable solutions to support the agricultural sector and enhance farmers’ productivity, ultimately contributing to food security and the region’s development.
“Please support the program of NIA and the government as a whole, as this is a true opportunity from which everyone can benefit,” Plaza concluded. (EDT/RBI/PIA9-Zamboanga Sibugay)
