NIA completes irrigation project in Baco, Oriental Mindoro

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) — The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) recently completed the construction of Baco Communal Irrigation System located at Dulangan II, Baco, Oriental Mindoro, benefitting some 23 farmers.

The construction of the said irrigation system costs ₱933,885.30, which involves restoring a canal that spans 271.65 meters.

In a press release, NIA said that the project focused on the construction of canal lining to improve water flow and agricultural productivity in the region. This initiative will serve an area of 30.42 hectares and benefit 23 farmers.

Dulangan II Irrigators Association of Baco Oriental Mindoro Inc. treasurer Renato G. Pastrana expressed his humble appreciation to NIA MIMAROPA for the successful completion of this project.

“Ito pong bagong proyekto ng NIA sa amin sa Dulangan II ay malaki po ang katulungan sa aming mga farmers na nangangailangan po ng tubig dahil noong wala pa po ito [ay] umaasa lang po kami sa sahod [ng] ulan. Ngayong nagkaroon ng ganitong proyekto na irrigation ay hindi na po kami nahihirapan sa pagbubukid,” Pastrana said.

(This new project of NIA here in Dulangan II is a big help to our farmers who need water [for our farm] because prior to this project, we are solely dependent on rain. Now that it [project] is here, we are not anymore struggling on our farming.)

The association is optimistic that the improved irrigation infrastructure will enhance water flow, leading to more abundant harvests.

Moreover, NIA noted that this development signifies a positive step towards supporting the agricultural sector in the province of Oriental Mindoro, ensuring better irrigation and increased productivity for local farmers. (GATS/PIA MIMAROPA)
