NLRC 8th Division resolves 574 labor disputes in 8 months, awards P104 million to aggrieved workers

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) — The National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) 8th Division has resolved numerous labor disputes between January and August 2024, culminating in the awarding of P104 million in monetary benefits to aggrieved workers.

During the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas forum on September 17, NLRC Commissioner Lawyer Abdul Azis U. Metmug disclosed that the division handled 574 cases at an average of 79 decisions per month.

He emphasized that they still managed to achieve a total of P104 million in judgment monetary awards despite the division’s workload challenges due to the limited number of commissioners. Currently, the NLRC 8th Division, which covers the entire Mindanao region, operates with only two commissioners.

“We had to double time to maintain that number of disposal decisions,” he said.

Metmug also explained that the NLRC branch is divided into two parts: the Regional Arbitration Branch and the NLRC 8th Division. The Regional Arbitration Branch acts as the frontline, receiving cases initially before they are forwarded to the division for adjudication.

The “Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas” is a coordinated weekly forum organized by the Presidential Communications Office in collaboration with the Philippine Information Agency. It aims to highlight the accomplishments and initiatives of government agencies at the regional level. (APB/PIA-10)
