CEBU CITY, Cebu (PIA) – As the holiday season approaches, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in Region 7 has reminded the public to maintain a healthy and balanced diet.
During the Association of Government Information Officers (AGIO) 7 Year-end Assessment/General Assembly held in Cebu City, NNC-7 Nutritionist-Dietician/Nutrition officer Mary Gessa Vergara emphasized the importance of making mindful food choices.
Vergara said the excessive consumption of sugary foods and drinks, high fat and processed meats, and alcoholic drinks during the holidays can lead to health problems such as weight gain, and increase the risk of lifestyle-related diseases.
“Reminder nga naa ni sya’y consequences. Kailangan gihapon nato magbantay even if panagsa ra ni sya or even during the holidays lang ta mag-ingon ani,” she said.
(Be reminded that there are consequences. We still have to be watchful even if it is seldom or even if we do this during the holidays.)
Healthy Holiday Tips
To help individuals stay healthy, Vergara shared the following tips on what to do during holidays:
- Choose wisely: Opt for healthier dishes such as fruits, vegetables, and lean protein.
- Healthy cooking methods: Use roasting, grilling, or steaming instead of frying.
- Control portions: Limit consumption of salty, fatty, and sweet foods.
- Healthy drinks: Skip sugary sodas and opt for unsweetened iced tea or fruit/herb-infused water.
- Stay active: Make time to exercise aimed for at least 30 minutes per day.
- Proper hydration and rest: Drink plenty of water and ensure adequate sleep despite the busy holiday.
“We are emphasizing this nutrition education for the holidays because of the data nga taas jud kaayo ang (with very high) cases of heart attacks and cardiovascular problems during this holiday season,” Vergara said. (MSH/PIA7)
