Nonstop rains force suspension of classes, flight cancellation in Masbate

MASBATE CITY, Masbate (PIA) – Classes in this city and several municipalities in Masbate have been suspended today, Friday, January 13, 2023, as a looming weather disturbance drenched most of this island province this weekend.

In an advisory to Masbate Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council,  Mark Anthony Rosal of Department of Education Division of Masbate Province said the municipalities that have so far declared class suspension were Batuan, San Fernando, San Jacinto, Monreal, Claveria, San Pascual, Baleno, Milagros, Mobo, Uson, Dimasalang, Palanas, Cataingan, Esperanza, Placer and Cawayan.

Masbate City Mayor Socrates Tuason also announced the suspension of all classes in elementary and high schools in anticipation of the risks posed by the incessant rains.

”(F)or the safety and welfare of (the public), especially the elementary and high school students, classes in both public and private….school(s) are hereby suspended today, January 13, 2023,” Tuason said in his Memorandum 11.

The bad weather also forced Cebgo to cancel its roundtrip flights DG 6177 / 6178 Manila – Masbate – Manila.

The low pressure area off Surigao del Sur is expected to continue to bring moderate to heavy with at times intense rain to the Bicol region, Eastern Visayas and parts of Mindanao on Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in its 11 a.m. bulletin.
