CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)– Targeting to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and accountability of the government procurement system in the country, the Regional Development Council (RDC)-10 conveyed its support for the proposed new Government Procurement Reform Act (GPRA).
Members of the council voiced their support during the 136th RDC-10 Full Council Meeting on December 15, recognizing the importance of amending the decades-old government procurement law to improve the government procurement system, shorten the bureaucratic intricacies, and ensure transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.
Arsenio Sebastian III, co-chairperson of the RDC-10 Macro and Development Administration Committee, said the bill is in line with Chapter 14 of the Philippine Development Plan 2023–2028 and Chapter 15 of the Northern Mindanao Regional Development Plan 2023–2028. It focuses on making government functions, systems, and mechanisms more efficient and strong.
He further emphasized that the said measure puts in place innovations that will make the procurement process more transparent, faster, and more efficient.
To recall, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in his second State of the Nation Address, urged Congress to work on an updated government procurement law to make government procurement more attuned to the changing times.
The House of Representatives took a significant step in this direction by approving the government procurement reform bill on its third and final reading on December 12, 2023. The move signifies a commitment to ushering in positive changes aligned with the evolving needs of the nation. (APB/PIA-10)
