CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) — Northern Mindanao ranked second in the country’s agriculture, forestry, and fishing (AFF) sector in 2024, contributing 10.5 percent to the national output, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

“Crops remain the dominant contributor (of the region’s AFF), which accounted for 58.8 percent of the industry’s gross value added. This was followed by animals, which contributed 27.6 percent. Support activities to AFF accounted for 10.9 percent. Fishing and aquaculture had a smaller share of 2.4 percent, and forestry and logging contributed just 0.3 percent to the sector’s overall performance,” said Janith Aves, PSA regional director.

Aves said the data reflects the role of crop production and livestock and poultry in sustaining agricultural output in the region.

The region’s AFF sector grew minimally by 0.1 percent in 2024.

Richardson Cua, OIC regional director of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-10, said the sector was affected by the extended El Niño episode, which disrupted the production of key crops such as banana, pineapple, and sugarcane. These crops represent over 80 percent of the region’s total crop output.

“Despite this, Region 10 remained the second largest contributor to the country’s agricultural output with a total value of P187 billion. AFF remains a critical input provider to industry and a pillar of rural livelihoods,” said Cua.

He emphasized that agriculture is a focus area in the region’s development agenda.

To enhance productivity and strengthen resilience, Cua said a multi-pronged strategy is being pursued. This includes stabilizing input costs, adopting improved farming methods, diversifying production, and promoting climate-resilient technologies.

Cua added that they are also supporting feasibility studies for agro-industrial parks and consolidation centers as part of the Metro Food Cluster strategy. (APB/PIA-10)
