CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) — Over 600 people expressed interest in the 348 technologies showcased at the recently concluded National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) 2024.
Hosted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-10, the event showcased the latest innovations and technologies developed by Filipino researchers and scientists.
Conducted from November 27 to December 1 in Cagayan de Oro, the gathering presented over 40 forums, networking activities, competitions, and an exhibit of DOST-supported technologies classified into clusters.
DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations, Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang said the technologies under the wealth creation cluster were the most popular, indicating a strong interest in technologies that support wealth and job creation.
DOST-10 Regional Director Romela N. Ratilla emphasized that the 8,200 registrations and 137,000 Facebook engagements reflect lives touched, dreams sparked, and progress in action.
“These are what truly matters and the “why” behind staging NSTW 2024. They remind us that science and technology are not just abstract concepts or lofty ideas but are tangible tools for progress, empowering communities, sparking innovation, and offering hope,” she said.
The event showcased advancements in microelectronics, quantum computing, and e-sports, providing a platform for national scientists, entrepreneurs, students, and other stakeholders to connect and collaborate.
DOST also presented initiatives to foster sustainable communities, such as the Circular Economy Program, which promotes smart and environmentally responsible technologies, as well as the creative brilliance of the KatHABI Fashion Show where tradition and technology came together.
Young innovators also competed in the StartUp Jam pitching competition, presenting new ideas and solutions.
Ratilla appreciated its partners and stakeholders who made the event possible.
“Bringing national science, technology, and innovation to Mindanao in Region 10 and Cagayan de Oro City was a bold move. We embraced this opportunity with determination, from brainstorming sessions to collaborating with partners and overcoming challenges. As we close NSTW 2024, let us carry its lessons forward and continue to champion science, technology, and innovation for the benefit of all Filipinos,” she added.
Meanwhile, the DOST announced that 2025 NSTW will be in Region 1.
DOST-1 Regional Director Teresita A. Tabaog accepted the challenge of hosting next year’s NSTW and highlighted it as an opportunity for them to showcase the impact of DOST on the Ilocanos and Pangasinenses. She further shared that they are not overly nervous, as they embrace the concept of “big brother, small brother,” living out the spirit of #OneDOST4U. (APB/PIA-10)
