BATANGAS CITY (PIA) – The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has reminded telecommunication companies to ensure uninterrupted services during calamities when communication signals are crucial.
Director Rolando San Luis, of NTC Region IV-A, said meetings are held with telco representatives to ensure that no signal disruptions are experienced during typhoons.
“We hold meetings with the telcos before the disaster and instruct them to prepare portable generators, to keep the cell sites operational. Even if they get knocked down by the typhoon, portable generators should be deployed, as power interruptions are always the main issue,” San Luis said during an episode of the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas.
Telcos are also advised to deploy adequate reinforcements, including round-the-clock personnel and portable generators, to address potential power outages that may affect cellphone signals.
In determining areas that are affected by signal outages, NTC banks on the reports and coordination of civic organizations on ground.
He added: “Power outages during calamities are the main issue, but we ensure that we always receive support, especially from civic action groups. They provide us with information about areas with no signals. The contributions of these civic action groups and radio enthusiasts in the localities are a great help to us.”
NTC urges telco companies to inform their subscribers about the measures undertaken to ensure that services are restored immediately during weather disturbances.
